Frequently asked questions
Can I hear the lessons explained in Malayalam, Hindi or Filipino? (മലയാളം · हिन्दी · Filipino)
Yes — it’s optional. Choose Malayalam, Hindi or Filipino under Profile → Voice lessons in my language (or press the button at the top of any lesson). Every lesson then shows a 🎧 voice lesson that explains it in your language, with the French examples read in French; choose “English only” to switch it off. When a tutor has recorded a lesson you simply press play; otherwise it is read by your device’s voice for that language. Hindi works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and Windows — if it is silent, add a Hindi voice: iPhone/iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → Hindi; Android: Settings → Text-to-speech → Speech Services by Google → Install voice data → Hindi (India); Windows: use Microsoft Edge or Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices → Hindi. Malayalam works on Android phones and tablets (Install voice data → Malayalam (India)) and on Windows in Microsoft Edge; Apple devices have no Malayalam voice, so on an iPhone you can read the full Malayalam text under “Read the Malayalam text” (the French parts have 🔊 buttons). Filipino works on Android phones and tablets (Install voice data → Filipino (Philippines)) and on Windows in Microsoft Edge; Apple devices don’t include a Filipino voice, so on an iPhone you can read the full text under “Read the Filipino text”.

I can’t hear the Listening audio.
Check your volume and silent switch, then press Play. On iPhone/iPad, turn off Silent mode. Chrome, Edge and Safari give the clearest voices.
The French audio sounds English or robotic — how do I add a French voice?
The recordings are read by your device’s French voice. If French sounds wrong, add one: iPhone/iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → French (choose a Canada voice such as Amélie, and download an “Enhanced” one). Android: Settings → System → Languages → Text-to-speech → Google → Install voice data → French (Canada). Windows: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices → Français (Canada). Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System voice → Manage voices → French. Then reload the page. Chrome and Edge on a computer usually include good French voices already.
How do I type French accents?
In the writing tasks, tap the accent buttons (é, è, à, ç…) above the answer box. On a phone or tablet, press and hold a letter (e.g. hold e for é, è, ê). You can also add a French (Canada) keyboard in your device settings.
I don’t speak any French. Where do I start?
Start with Module 0 and then the three French Foundations modules. Everything is explained in English, and every French word has a 🔊 button so you can hear it. Move on to the skills modules and practice tests once the foundations feel comfortable.
The Speaking recorder doesn’t work.
Allow microphone access when asked. If you said no before: on iPhone/iPad go to Settings → Safari (or GCI TEF) → Microphone; on Android, Settings → Apps → permissions; on a computer, click the lock icon beside the web address.
How do I install the app?
On iPhone/iPad in Safari: tap Share then Add to Home Screen. On Android or a computer in Chrome/Edge: tap Install when prompted, or use the browser menu → Install app.
When will my tutor mark my work?
Usually within 2 working days. You’ll see a badge on Results when feedback is ready.
Can I switch between the full TEF Canada and the citizenship (listening & speaking) track?
Yes — in Profile. Your progress on shared lessons is kept.
How do I delete my account?
Profile → Delete my account. This permanently removes your data and recordings.
